Mi piaceva il periodo a cavallo tra la fine degli anni ’80 e l’inizio degli anni ’90. Primo perchè ero più giovane, poi perchè la country music di quel periodo aveva un suono nuovo, moderno e nello stesso tempo tradizionale. E poi c’erano dei two step favolosi. In particolare “Just To See You Smile” di Tim McGraw che era (ed è) da sempre il mio preferito. Sono convinto che tanti amori siano nati sulle note di questa canzone. Purtroppo col passare degli anni la musica country ha inevitabilmente seguito le tendenze del mercato scivolando sempre più verso sonorità pop. Salvo alcune eccezioni, quasi tutti i grandi nomi della country music anni ’90 sono spariti o si sono dovuti adeguare, se volevano vendere i loro albums, a questo trend. Tim McGraw ha resistito più di altri, ma alla fine ha dovuto cedere anche lui e devo ammettere che gli ultimi cds mi avevano un pò deluso. Quindi ho affrontato questo “Two Lanes Of Freedom” in maniera scettica e anche un pochino prevenuta. Invece devo dire che è bello, a cominciare proprio dalla title track. Non siamo a livello di Not A moment Too Soon, All I Want o Everywhere ma vi sono delle buone canzoni. In particolare Nashville Without You che sembra tratta da un album anni ’90 e si candida a diventare un classico della produzione del singer dalla Louisiana. Grande la voce, grande la musica e grande il testo, Nashville Without You, con la steel che finalmente si fa (ri)sentire, è un tuffo nel passato e vale da sola l’acquisto del cd. Da segnalare anche Southern Girl, One Of Those Night e Number 37405. Non pervenute invece It’s Your World e Mexicoma ma si tratta ovviamente di una questione di gusti, quindi del tutto personale.
I liked the period between the late 80’s and early 90’s. Firstly because I was younger, then because the country music of that period had a new sound, modern and traditional at the same time. And then there were some fabulous two steps. In particular, “Just To See You Smile” by Tim McGraw that was (and still is) my all time favourite. I am convinced that many love stories were born to the notes of this song. Unfortunately over the years, country music has inevitably followed the trends of the market, veering more and more towards pop sounds. With a few exceptions, almost all the big names in country music of the 90’s have disappeared or have had to adapt to this trend if they wanted to sell their albums. Tim McGraw has resisted more than others, but eventually had to give in too, and I must admit that I found the last cds a little disappointing. So I approached this “Two Lanes Of Freedom” with a little skepticism and even a little bit biased. Instead, I have to admit that it’s good, starting right from the title track. We are not at the level of “Not A Moment Too Soon”, “All I Want” or “Everywhere”, but there are some good songs. In particular it seems that “Nashville Without You” comes from a 90’s album, and is set to become a classic of the singer from Louisiana. Great voice, great music and great lyrics, “Nashville Without You”, with the sound of the steel guitar, which is finally reheard,is a blast from the past, and alone, is worth the price of the cd. Also noteworthy; “Southern Girl”, “One Of Those Nights” and “Number 37405”. Unclassified instead, “It’s Your World” and “Mexicoma”, but, this is obviously a matter of taste, and therefore, a personal opinion.
